Happy New Year! Sorry for the lack of blog action in recent weeks, we got a bit caught up with the craziness of the holiday season at the shop! Since the new year we have been busily preparing our new and improved VINTAGE SHOWROOM space! The showroom is a 500 square foot space dedicated to our finest vintage treasures including fabulous DESIGNER, boutique and couture creations from the 20th Century. The ever-expanding collection includes iconic pieces from CHANEL, YSL, LANVIN, OSSIE CLARK, VALENTINO, EMILIO PUCCI, and many more, along with fragile early pieces from the 1800's - 1940's. We are excited to announce that we are now MAKING APPOINTMENTS, even though we still have a few finishing touches to add. We also have plans to take it online in the coming year....here's a preview!

AMT Jewel Tone Themed Holiday Window 2011

Sometimes we pick stuff up and hold onto it until the right occasion arises, and our new Holiday Window is the perfect example. We bought this amazing vintage pink and gold sequin fabric at a sale a few years back and have been storing it ever since. Last fall we picked up a fabulous 1940's showgirl peacock costume (complete with real peacock feathers!) whilst on a buying trip in the UK. Add some vintage ornaments, a 1950's jewel-toned ribbon cocktail dress, and strapless emerald green sequin gown that just happened to be lying around the shop, and we have the recipe for one of our favorite windows yet! Enjoy...

The Great Outdoors...More Vintage Trends for Fall/Winter 2011

There is no shortage of outdoors space in North America, and plenty of great sportswear companies have and continue to supply it's outdoors loving population with everything they could want and need . Wool hunting shirts & jackets from companies like Woolrich & Pendleton have been serving Americans well for around a hundred years, and in recent years this rugged utilitarian clothing has crossed over into street style and contemporary fashion. In 2011 you are just as likely to see someone sporting a buffalo plaid hunting coat on the streets of Brooklyn or Jersey City as you are in a rural town in Pennsylvania or Oregon. Perhaps the classic cut and styling, paired with the hard wearing fabrics and practical functionality of the garments appeals to the cash strapped modern day urbanite. Going vintage shopping for these heritage brands can definitely gets you the biggest bang for your buck. Here are some great outdoor wear pieces we have/had for the season...

1960's 'Abercrombie & Fitch' Safari label

You'd find it hard to believe now, but before Abercrombie was a teen-loved mall-monster with greased up hunks, and nauseating cologne pumping from its doors, it used to make really great American outdoor gear, camping and hunting equipment. Started by David Abercrombie all the way back in 1892, it was originally called 'Abercrombie & Co'. He was joined by business partner Elra Fitch around 1900, who provided the money to expand the company, and then bought out David's share in the company a few years later. In 1913 the re-named 'Abercrombie & Fitch' moved from Broadway to Fifth Ave, and by the late 1920's it was widely considered to be the largest sporting goods store in the world. The company fell into trouble in the 60's and was declared bankrupt by the mid 1970's. In the late 1980's the company was bought by the Limited. They re-marketed the brand to teens and college students with a softer approach to All-American sportswear, and transformed Abercrombie into the mall chain we know today.

The 'Hudson's Bay company' dates way back to the 1670's as a fur trading post. Furs were traded for manufactured good, and the iconic point blankets were traded by Europeans to Canadians and Native American in exchange for Beaver pelts. By the 1800's there were numerous Hudson's Bay Company trading posts throughout Canada, and many were converted into retail shops as the 20th Century approached. Hooded coats called Capotes were made from the point blankets, perfect for the harsh Canadian winters. The company continues to operate to this day.

The L.L.Bean company was founded in 1912 by avid hunter and fisherman Leon Leonwood Bean in Greenwood Maine. He developed a waterproof boot made from a lightweight leather upper and rubber bottoms that he marketed to hunters like himself. After obtaining a list of Maine hunting license holders, he prepared a mail order circular, and set up shop in his brothers basement in Freeport, Maine. From there he started a nation wide mail order business. The mail order company continues to thrive today, and now boasts over a hundred retail and outlet stores worldwide. The original L.L.Bean boot (see above) remains a staple of the company's outdoor image a hundred years later!

Vintage trends for Fall/Winter 2011-12....Fur.

Fur is definitely one of the hottest trends for Fall/Winter 2011-2012, and has been heavily used in designers collections over the past few years. In no way do we condone the use of fur in fashion today, but if you must buy into the trend, we encourage you to go vintage! There are tons of amazing vintage fur garments out there in the world, so recycle and give them a new lease on life.

This is something we've been wanting to do for a long time.....

...and thanks to the amazing team at Spoke Visuals, our shop fixture designs (and dreams) have been realized! They built us these fantastic Maple wood units off-site at their workshop in Brooklyn, then installed them in about 5 hours, meaning we only had to be closed for one day!!!

After a few hours of moving things around before and during the install, and many more re-organizing and merchandising after they had left, we had our new-look shop looking sharp and ready for business the next day! The new shop design has given us more display and rack space, not to mention tons more floor space...

Just when you thought it couldn't get any hotter... we only go and find this outrageously sexy 1970's Playboy (of course) monokini swimsuit! Check it out...

The swimsuit brings to mind Rudi Gernreich's famous 1960's topless monokini, modeled by the fabulous Peggy Moffitt below, and the classic Bunny shaped swimsuit on the cover of the August 1968 issue of Playboy magazine we sold in the store a while back.

The Fantasy and Mystery Behind Vintage Clothing..

If you're anything like us, you probably find the mystery and history behind vintage clothing both intriguing and fascinating. There's an undeniable romantic quality about the clothes that people who wear and collect vintage love to embrace. The idea of wearing something that someone once lovingly made by hand, or that was cherished by someone else has endless possibilities in the fantasy of our imagination.

As vintage dealers we hand pick every item for our store and showroom, and we often meet the original owners in the process. It's always great to hear a few stories about the items we purchase first hand. Other times we learn stories from friends and relatives who knew them, and often we are left with only a few clues and our imagination has to do the rest. It is especially exciting to discover actual photographs of people wearing the garments.

On one particular occasion we acquired a collection of beautiful 1930's & 40's dresses from a neighbor that had belonged to his Grandmother. His Mother had lovingly kept the dresses with photographs of his Grandmother wearing them pinned to each dress, along with a little note explaining when and where each picture was taken. It was a wonderful discovery and piece of family history, and something we enjoyed sharing with the customers who bought the dresses!

We made a similar discovery at a recent estate sale where we had purchased a number of things. On returning home we found 2 small plastic viewfinders hanging from one of the garments. Curiously peering through revealed an image of the owner wearing the outfit on a vacation to the U.S. Virgin Islands, probably in the late 1960's! We don't know much about this mystery lady, but she wore it well! Take a look...

The weather in Jersey City is SOOOO HOT right now, so we figured it was time to change up the window display for the Summer months. What better way to cool off than to head down the shore for a vintage beach theme, and although 1920's/30's wool swimsuits might not be all that practical, they sure look cool ;) It's also the first time we've used two mannequins in the window display. Followers of the blog might remember them and the suits from an earlier post we did on 1920's swimsuits. The skinny on the skinny...Historical highs of the narrow tie...

The skinny tie has been a popular fixture in men's, and women's fashion for the past decade or so, but like most fashions, it's been seen before. What goes around comes around, and the skinnier cousin of the neck tie has been falling in and out of style since as far back as the 1920's!

We just picked up the fantastic collection of narrow knit ties above dating from the 1920's, and they inspired us to blog about the high points in skinny neck tie fashion over the decades...

1920's - The beginning

The 1960's or the 1980's probably spring to mind when you think about the vintage skinny look, so it may surprise you to know that the original models date way back to the 1920's.

These great examples in silk or rayon were found in their original box. They vary between 1.5 to 2.5 inches in width at the widest point, and are relatively short in length compared to modern ties, measuring 36 to 40 inches in length, as they used to wear their pants much higher back then ;)

1950's & 60's - The hayday

Ties began to widen in the 1930's and throughout the 1940's and stayed that way until the early 1950's when Esquire magazine introduced their 'Mr T' look, designed to make a man look taller and trimmer with a tapered narrow brimmed hat, 3-button notched lapel jacket and slimmer tie. Young men started to wear their ties thinner and longer as the decade progressed and waistbands lowered. The look was popularised by the Rat Pack, perhaps the most famous of the skinny tie poster boys to this day. This is also the look seen most recently in AMC's hit drama Mad Men, a definite influence on todays slim suit, tie and fedora wearing trend.

The classic early 1960's skinny ties like the ones we have above were popular until the mid 1960's in a rainbow of colors, patterns and fabrics, and were generally 2 to 2.5 inches in width at the widest point. Knit ties were again popular, almost direct copies of the 1920's design complete with square tip, though usually only in solid colors.

Across the pond the in the coffee bars of London's West End, jazz loving modernists were adopting the look of their American idols Miles Davis et al, and four young men in Liverpool took the look to an even greater audience. Thi wouldn't be the last time music and skinny ties joined forces....

1970's & 80's - The New Wave

The mid 1960's saw the skinny ties popularity peak, and widths widened once more from then to an extreme in the 70's. Wide ties with wide knots and even wider collars were the order of the day, until the Punk and New Wave bands of the late 70's looked to create a stripped down statement both in sound and style, and the narrow style return to prominence. The look achieved huge popularity again thanks in no small way to the popularity of the musician who championed it.

The Jam, Blondie & Elvis Costello were among the most prominent and sharpest looking of the New Wave set.

Ties were often super skinny at around 1 inch in width, and popular in vinyl & leather along with the more traditional silk & rayon variations, and of course the fabric of the day - Polyester!

2000's - The new New Wave

Influential french designer/photographer Hedi Silmane, director of Dior Homme from 2000 - 2007, is largely credited as the instigator behind the latest chapter in the skinny tie story. The current slim silhouette was initially championed by indie rock bands like The Libertines, The Strokes & Franz Ferdinand and became more widely adopted on a street level as the decade wore on. It has since been seen on countless other runway shows and can be found in clothing stores across the land, and so it's popularity holds strong ...for now!

The skinny tie, like all fashion trends doesn't work for everyone, and is probably best suited to people with slimmer frames and narrower faces. Stop by Another Man's Treasure to check out our great selection of authentic vintage ties from the 1920's - 80's. Most importantly...look sharp!

Fans of reconstructed vintage rejoice, as our line 'Vintage Modern' returns to the shop for the 3rd year running! The perfect hybrid of 20th century style and 21st century fashion...

The line consists mainly of dresses & blouses from the 1970s and 80s, carefully selected for their fabric and style, but that might be slightly damaged and in need of a little love or updating to reach their full potential ;). With some tasteful revamping and tailoring, which could be as simple as shortening a hemline, or turning a long sleeve into a capped one, we've created a hip one-of-a-kind look, whilst staying true to the original garment.

We have developed the front section into a small vintage showroom & archive space that can now be viewed and shopped by appointment! It's still a work in progress, but we thought we'd give you a little peek at what we've been up to....

At our shop 'Another Man's Treasure' on Grove Street, we strive to maintain a well organized & merchandised vintage shop packed with affordable and wearable vintage, adding new items constantly. There the focus is on classic vintage pieces, wardrobe staples, on trend finds, accessories and some designer bargains. At the AMT Vintage Showroom, we have a small finely curated selection of interesting and iconic vintage boutique, designer & couture pieces, perfect for collectors, events & editorial, along with rare and fragile early treasures that could serve as a design inspiration resource. Customers will also have the opportunity to shop our off-season items.

Indecent exposure...vintage bathing suits from the 1920's!

With no willing swimwear models at hand, and a severe lack of warm weather in Jersey City, we decided to take a more creative approach to showcase an amazing collection of 1920's & 30's wool bathing suits we recently purchased! take a look...

Until the mid 1800's, swimming at the beach as a form of relaxation and enjoyment wasn't a popular pastime. Around this time, grand new rail systems had begun to transport holdaying Victorian families to the coast in search of fun and frolicks. Victorian society frowned upon exposing any naked flesh to the sun or prying eyes, and the swimwear of the day was extremely covered up, long sleeved, full length and shapeless from the neck down to the toes! Until then men and women had bathed separately, and as it grew in popularity 'bathing machines' were developed to preserve female modesty. They were basically changing carriages that were pulled by horses to the sea, allowing ladies to discretely take a dip.

At the turn of the 20th Century the Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman toured the United States, delighting audiences with an underwater act, and a form-fitting swim suit the likes of which had never been seen. She was arrested for indecent exposure because her swim suits showed her bare arms, neck and legs! At the beginning of the 1920's she returned to the States, marketing her own line of swim wear, and once again became the focus of censorship efforts.

This was the start of the roaring 20's though, and a fun loving and liberated generation embraced the new changes in swim wear design, much to the disdain of their elders and the authorities. Strict regulations and guidelines were put in place on beaches across the country by local governments, dictating how much flesh could be exposed. As the decade wore on though, the bathing suit started to become less modest and more widely accepted, first uncovering the arms, then the legs up to the mid thigh. Collars receded from high on the neck down to the top of the bosom. The development of new fabrics allowed for more comfortable and practical swimwear than the earlier full wool suits which could weigh up to 9 pounds when wet!

This Washington beach allowed no more than 6 inches of flesh to be exposed above the knee, anything more was deemed obscene!

It wasn't until the 1930's that it became widely acceptable for a man to bathe tank-less, and not until the mid 1940's that the bikini appeared - exposing the female midriff for the first time. The navel though remained covered with high-waisted trunks and swim shorts until well into the 1950's...if only they knew what Rudi Gernreich had in store a few years later - but that's a story for another day!

It's only rock & roll....T-Shirts!

The vintage rock t-shirt has become one of the most enduring fashion trends and must-have vintage items of the past decade or so, and it's hard to imagine a time when a retro rock shirt won't be cool. Mainstream fashion retailers picked up on this street style and ran with it. Today, the maket place is flooded with new 'vintage' reproductions from the golden age of rock tees - the 70's & 80's, all pre-washed and faded for that 'vintage look'. As with anything though, there's no substitute for the real deal, a well loved, authentic, classic rock and roll tee.

Rocking out on Sunset Strip; Jessica Alba in the ubiquitous 'Rolling Stones' tongue logo shirt, Kristen Stewart goes for edgy and obscure in 'Minor Threat', David Beckham staying true to his East-End roots in 'Iron Maiden', and Mischa Barton channels the 1970's in 'Fleetwood Mac' & high-waisted jeans.

Unlike concert posters and album covers, more celebrated forms of rock and roll art, the rock tee continues to fly under the critics radar. Most memorabilia dealers and major auction houses do not work with vintage rock t-shirts, which is suprising, as vintage clothing retailers and online sellers regularly get hundreds and somtimes thousands of dollars for authentic rock shirts. This critical snub clearly hasn't dampened the publics demand for vintage rock shirts, perhaps even adding to the aura of insider cool and snobbery associated with them. A 'fuck you, rock t-shirts are our culture, you wouldn't understand' kind of attitude.

Promotional rock & roll t-shirts were almost non-existant in the 1950's & 60's, a nascent industry that bloomed in the 70's, and positively exploded in the 80's. Considering that millions of these shirts were produced in their day, authentic vintage rock shirts are suprisingly hard to find, and it's difficult to estimate how many have survived over the years. Washing, wear and time all take their toll on clothing and fabrics, not least cheaply made t-shirts, so it's not hard to imagine that the majority have disintegrated over the years, or were simply thrown away as musical tastes and trends changed. This of course adds to their exclusive appeal and financial value. A great rock shirt is always an exciting find for any vintage lover or dealer, so you can imagine our delight upon unearthing a nice collection of them on a recent buying trip! The 1950's was a golden age for America in man ways, none less so than in the world of menswear. Post-war America had loosened up its style, moving away from the more formal aproach to fashion of previous decades, and it was now acceptable to wear work and sportswear items like jeans as everyday attire. Along with blue jeans, lightweight wool and rayon gabardine jackets and shirts are one of the enduring symbols of the decade. Vintage Roberta Di Camerino ...Manhattan Vintage Show preview II

The Manhattan vintage clothing show is a great place to find exceptional vintage designer and couture clothing and accessories. With over 90 vintage dealers on show, there is no shortage of fabulous high-end creations from the likes of 'Chanel', 'Gucci' et al, but it's also a fantastic place to discover some of the lesser known but equally influential and important designers of the 20th Century. For every 'Christian Dior' and 'Yves Saint Laurent', there is an 'Ossie Clark', 'Norman Norell', 'Ceil Chapman', & 'Madame Gres', designers who also changed the world of fashion, and who's influence can still be seen to this day, but whose names are perhaps less familiar to those outside of the fashion world.

Roberta Di Camerino is one such designer who never really became a household name, but who holds a special place in the hearts of the fashion cognoscenti, and vintage collectors alike. She is most famous for her richly colored velvet handbags, and her interesting use of trompe l'oeil effects that appear as pleats, buttons, buckles, saddle stitching, pockets and other details, but are in fact printed onto the textiles.

Founding her fashion house in 1945, Roberta Di Camerino was an innovator of her time, using richly patterned and colored fabrics for her handbags that had previously only been used for clothing. In 1946 she made a bag patterned with a trellis of 'R's', foreshadowing Gucci's 'G's', and is widely credited with creating the status bag concept. Like many of her Italian predecessors and contemporaries, she utilized traditional artisans and craftsmen of her native Venice. The hardware on her bags were made by the same artisans who made fine bronze hardware for Venetian gondolas, and she used the two hundred year old firm 'Bevilaqua' of central Venice to create her velvet textiles on hand operated looms. Guest Blog by Amie Kershbaum...A Lesson in Japanese Vintage!

As a self confessed vintage fiend, I pride myself on my ability to recognize the work of couture designers and their influence on contemporaries. I do a fairly good job with English, French and Italian designers, but when it comes to Japanese designers I can't tell a Comme des Garcons when it is staring me in the face as Meika (owner of Another Man's Treasure) can attest from experience. Well I should amend that hopefully to couldn't now that I've been to a fantastic exhibit at the Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology).

The exhibit, titled Japan Fashion Now is focused on contemporary Japanese fashion but sets the stage with a gallery of 1980s garments from the groundbreaking Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo (of the aforementioned Comme des Garcons), and Yohji Yamamoto. I was lucky enough to attend a tour of the exhibit led by Dr. Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of the Museum. She shared her memories of just how shocking the work of this troika was even to the fashion community. It wasn't just the women on the street who balked, fashion industry peers were shaking their heads too.

Miyake, Kawakubo and Yamamoto were the first non-Western designers to have a major impact on global contemporary fashion when they showed in Paris in the early 1980s. Their collections were a sea of black and navy with the occasional taupe. Very few fashion lovers are shocked to see all black ensembles today, but at the time such a palette was revolutionary. And speaking of revolutionary, the deconstructionism these three championed was a huge departure from Western couture tradition. Oversized, asymmetrical, garments with distressed and unfinished details are now regular fixture of not only runway fashion, but also in subtler form at retailers in malls across the globe.

I was pleasantly surprised to see tucked in the back corner of the gallery a traditional Japanese textile and pieces from Hanae Mori and Kenzo who helped lay the foundation in 1970s Paris for the recognition of their countrymen (and women). This provided a fantastic bridge to the main gallery, which I encourage vintage lovers to visit particularly for the great men's workwear section and Han Ahn Soon's take on Yves Saint Laurent, the Hello Kitty Mondrian dress. And if you appreciate future vintage as well, one of my personal favorites was the skull motif in Jun Takahasi's Undercover.

We came across this beautifully illustrated vintage pamphlet, most likely a promotional giveaway, uncovering the 'lost' art of tying a scarf, it seems a relevant today as the day it was printed!

We are always 'on the hunt' (if you'll excuse the pun) as vintage store owners, and vintage hunting & riding apparel is one of the things we are constantly on the look out for. Be it leather riding boots, waxed hunting jackets, buffalo plaid hunting shirts & coats, or tailored riding vests & jackets - our customers just can't get enough of it! And much as we don't condone the hunting of defenseless animals in any way whatsoever, we can't deny the style and quality of these

garments!

Riding & hunting themes have played a huge role in fashion over the years, and are regularly re-visited by fashion designers as a sources of inspiration, Ralph Lauren & Gucci (see our last post) being two brands that immediately spring to mind, and wearing an authentic vintage garment can add a touch of quality and individuality to ones fashion statement.

Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in American heritage brands like 'Pendleton', 'Filson' & 'Woolrich', and hip collaborations with the likes of 'Opening Ceremony' & 'Converse' have helped to bring these brands into focus once again. No doubt the popularity of vintage shopping has opened a new generations eyes up to a quality & craftsmanship that their grandparents and great grandparents took for granted, a quality that has inspired a new demand for 'Made in the U.S.A.' clothing.

Regardless of trends and fads, a vintage Gucci handbag is always fashionable. One of the most prestigious and recognizable brands in the world, the enduring appeal of Gucci as a symbol of quality and luxury would probably come as no surprise to it's founder Guccio Gucci...

Like most of the European luxury brands, the gucci story starts with the most humble of beginnings. Born in Florence in 1881, Guccio Gucci was forced out of his home by his bankrupt and embittered father. He travelled to London and found work as a dishwasher at the Savoy Hotel. Working his way up at the Savoy, a hotel that was quickly becoming a notable gathering place for the upper classes, he absorbed the refined aesthetic of English nobility, and learned that the key to attracting wealthy customers was the perception of quality and exclusiveness. It was here that he
developed a fascination for the quality personalized leather luggage used by the guests, made by craftsmen from all over Europe.

After saving enough money, Gucci returned to his native Florence, and began to work for a firm specializing in handcrafted leather products. Able and amitious, he started his own leather company in the early 1920's primarily making saddlery and leather goods crafted by local artisans which he sold to the wealthy tourists that flocked to Florence.

Gucci's business and reputation grew over the coming years, and he opened his first retail location in Rome in 1938, attracting a sophisticated clientelle drawn to his equestrian inspired collection of exclusive leather bags, luggage, shoes & belts. The horsebit and stirrup motifs were created in this time, and endure as symbols of the Gucci fashion house to this day.

Under the fascist dictatorship of Mussolini, with tough sanctions imposed on Italy, it became increasingly difficult for Gucci to purchase all the leather needed for his products. Ever the innovator, he turned this apparent misfortune to his advantage, and began creating handbags and luggage of both canvas and leather that would become instantly popular, and forever Gucci. It was also during this time that the 'Bamboo Bag', a handbag with a bamboo handle was introduced, another iconic Gucci product still in production today.

In the early 1950's he developed the trademark green & red striped webbing, yet another equestrian inspired design, derived from the saddle girth. It remains to this day, and is one of the most familiar identifiers of the brand. Gucci began to grow into a globally recognized symbol of modern luxury, with stores in Rome, Milan and New York. When Guccio Gucci died in 1953, the company was passed onto his 4 sons, who continued to grow the brand whilst retaining the legendary craftmanship associated with the brand.

Cherished by the most iconic figures of the time, including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Liz Taylor, the company grew from strength to strength. Jackie Kennedy famously carried the Gucci shoulder bag, which today is known simply as the 'Jackie O'. It was during the 1960's that the interlocking double 'G' logo was introduced. The house of Gucci was considered the pinnacle of chic and remained so throughout the 1960's and 1970's

After a slump in fortunes in the late 1980's and early 1990's, the company was triumphantly re-launched with American designer Tom Ford at the helm as creative director. Today, Gucci is the biggest selling Italian brand in the world with over 270 stores worldwide!

Manhattan Vintage Show...Starts Today!

We have been busy preparing for the Manhattan Vintage Show for the past couple of weeks, and meant to post this yesterday...oh well, better late than never!
By the time this is posted, the show will have opened it's doors to the public. It's a beautiful New York Fall day, so why not stop by and check out all the wonderful vintage clothing and accessories on display at the Metropolitan Pavillion (125 West 18th St, 1-8pm & tomorrow 11am-6pm)...'The Collection That 100 Years Of Design Built', along with a great exhibit featuring vintage clothing used in the current HBO series 'Boardwalk Empire'!

In keeping with the 100 years of design tag, we will be bringing a sumptuous mix of early & fragile vintage treasures from the late 19th and early 20th Century, like the orange beaded 1920s flapper dress above, and over 300 interesting boutique and designer pieces spanning the 30's-80's including this Japanese designer denim jacket.

As vintage clothing dealers we come across lots of interesting finds all the time, many of which require a degree of research and detective work to try and trace the origin and find out any information we can about an obscure designer or long since vanished boutique. This helps us when trying to apraise the piece, and is also interesting for our customers and of course satisfies our own curiosity. Sometimes though, even with all the books in the world and the power of mighty Google at our fingertips, we hit a brick wall.

We recently bought some great designer bags and clothing from a New York socialite, including this beautiful pair of hand painted leather clutches, and suede jacket. We were not familiar with the designer but found them to be very unusual and intriguing pieces, and although we have tried to research the artist/designer 'Elyse Stone,' we can't seem to find out any information about her or even a trace of her existence! If anyone out there knows something about the artist, or these wonderful pieces then we would love to hear from you. All we know is that they were purchased in the 1970s at a boutique in NYC....

....perhaps the story behind these particular treasures will remain a mystery!

New Wave, New York! ....Cool vintage NYC post cards

We found these vintage New York City 'New Wave' photo-collage postcards a few years ago, and figured it was about time we did something with them as they are totally awesome! So enjoy...

These postcards from 1984 by Dennis O'Donnell are somewhat typical of the graphic art from the 'New Wave' period of the 1970s & 80s. Drawing heavily from the 1950s American dream and Richard Hamiltons 1956 pop art collage 'Just What Is It That Makes Today's Home So Different, So Appealing', along with sci-fi, comic books and kitsch, the New Wave set were obsessed with retro 50s & 60s imagery. The influence can be seen in bands like Blondie and the B 52's, artists of the time such as Kenny Scharf, and the clothing and advertising of fashion labels like 'Fiorucci' (as seen in our post from last year featuring Fiorucci skirts with retro 5os style novelty prints). Definitely a fun and colorful time, especially in New York City!

Inspired by the stylish old chap above (a Victorian tin type photograph), and some recent pre-1920s finds, we decided to do a little research into the sartorial trends of the Victorian & Edwardian man, something we don't have too much experience in. In 2010, at well over a century old, these are definitely things you don't come across everyday, so it is especially exciting when we find them, and to share the discoveries with you!

Some Victorian & Edwardian pieces we currently have

Male fashion in the second half of the 19th century was dominated by the frock coat (see below), a mans coat with full skirt both front and back that reached just above the knee. It was commonly used for both day and evening wear through the 1890s, making it the most versatile coat of the Victorian wardrobe. The most significant difference between the trousers of then and now is the waistline. The Victorian man wore his pants higher, at or just below the navel. Trousers always had a button-up fly, as the zipper was only invented late in the century, and wasn't commonly used in clothes until the 1930s. Belts weren't used either, instead braces or suspenders in canvas or leather kept your pants up.

The Victorian gent wore a variety of vests in every combination of cut, color and cloth. Chinese silk became ubiquitous and relatively inexpensive during the mid 1800s, and silk vests were very common for day and evening wear, an expressive flash of color in an otherwise monochromatic get up. Many men would wear their coats buttoned only at the top, thereby allowing more of their vests to be flaunted. Towards the turn of the century, wool and cotton (see below) vests in conservative colors became more common for day wear.

Although similar to the shirts we wear today, due to limitations in machining and tailoring Victorian shirts were cut more fully. They also often buttoned up the back. Shirts were washed less frequently, and as a result men wore band collar shirts, adding detachable collars and cuffs to smarten their look for formal occasions. Some even had removable bib fronts which were reversible, allowing stains to be hidden and thus staying neat in appearance without laundering the entire shirt.

Like vests, hats were always worn, and in a wide variety of styles. Top hats were de rigueur for formal events throughout the 19th and early 20th century, and also as day wear for the more established gentlemen. Bowlers or Derbies became more common as the 19th century progressed, and by the turn of the century outnumbered most other hat styles.

One of the most frequent requests in our vintage shop has always been vintage designer items, especially bags. It seems everybody wants to own a vintage Chanel, Gucci or Louis Vuitton purse. It's no surprise, and buying designer vintage makes a lot of sense for those of us who's budgets can't stretch to new designer prices . It will almost always be a good investment, as you are are getting an authentic piece that was most likely very expensive new, and will retain it's value or even increase over the years if well looked after.

We are always on the hunt for these items, but they are scarce, and often too expensive for us to buy and re-sell.

Last week we had an opportunity to buy a few great designer pieces, including this vintage 'Louis Vuitton' speedy 30 hand bag! This is a timeless piece in the famous LV monogram canvas with brown leather and golden brass hardwear, a must for any Louis collector, and it'll be in the shop today!

Louis Vuitton Malletier, more commonly known as Louis Vuitton is a French fashion house that started way back in 1854. The LV monogram, introduced in the late 1800's is perhaps the most recognized luxury brand in the world.

Louis Vuitton started his company as a maker of trunks. After working for French royalty, he developed an advanced knowledge of what was required to make a good traveling case, and so began to make his own luggage. He introduced his lightweight, airtight, flat bottom trunks, the first trunks that were stackable with ease for long voyages. Before his introduction, trunks were generally heavy and rounded on top to promote water run off, and thus couldn't be stacked. The Vuitton trunks practicality made them hugely successful and prestigious, and other luggage makers soon began to immitate the style and design. Vuitton set about re-designing the trunk exterior to protect against this duplication of his look, firstly with brown and beige stripes, later with a canvas pattern bearing the logo 'marque L. Vuitton Deposee' which roughly translates to 'L. Vuitton Trademark'. After his death in 1892, his son Georges vuitton began to build the company internationally, launching the signature monogram canvas, and made worldwide patents on it which proved successful in stopping counterfeiting.

The word 'Bohemien' dates back to early 19th Century France when artists and creators (who arrived via Bohemia) began to concentrate in lower rent, lower class Gypsy neighborhoods. Popularized and adapted to 'Bohemian' in the English language by the mid 19th Century, as defined in the Westminster Review, 1865;

'A 'Bohemian' is simply an artist or litterateur who consciously or unconsciously, secedes from conventionality in life and art'

Bohemianism spread across Europe and to America, and has drifted in and out of style through various movements and countercultures over the past 150 years, notably the 'Beats', and the 'Hippies', a movement informed by the Beat generation via writers such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and William Burroughs. It was popular throughout this time period to wear vintage gypsy style blouses & skirts from Eastern Europe along with lacey embroidered Victorian blouses & dresses, vintage clothing and bohemian lifestyles have been closely liked ever since.

Bohemian Chic part I

Summer is definitely here, and so too is a trend that shows no signs of going away anytime soon, boho chic. Think Woodstock meets Stevie Nicks, only a little cleaner and updated for the 21st Century ala Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Nicole Richie et al. It's a style that can be comfortable and easy to wear, although finding the really great vintage pieces can be surprisingly hard. To get the look mix vintage sandals, western/granny boots, tooled leather belts & bags, and long necklaces with modern & vintage-inspired pieces, or go all-out hippie from head to toe, with authentic vintage kaftans, wrap skirts, peasant style blouses and flouncy, lacy dresses like 'Gunne Sax'. Novelty prints, 50's style tutu dresses, leopard print, punk rock studs...what's not to love about the whimsical rock 'n' roll edged fashions of the ever spunky and over-the-top Betsey Johnson?!

Betsey's career started back in the 1960s as an intern at 'Mademoiselle' magazine. After winning a guest editor contest for the same publication she moved to Manhattan boutique Paraphernalia where she was their in-house designer, and became a prominent figure in Andy Warhol's New York scene along with Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground, and Warhol 'superstar' Edie Sedgwick who also became Betsey's fit model.

Betsey opened her first boutique 'Betsey Bunki Nini' on the Upper East side, and took over 'Alley Cat', a fashion label popular with musicians in the 1970s. Check out this super cool souvenir hat box and 'Adam' hat from the 1961 World's Fair, we just picked up.

In 1961 practically every man still wore a hat of some description every day, and the fedora was standard attire for every respectable gentleman. However, by the end of the 1960s this had changed, and a new generation threw the dress codes of previous generations out of the fashion window. Companies like 'Adam', and other major US hat manufacturers like 'Dobbs', 'Knox' & the ever popular 'Stetson' who had enjoyed success for decades saw sales fall drastically over a few short years, with some of the smaller companies falling by the wayside in the sales slump, others were gobbled up by the Stetson company who looked to steady and strengthen their brand in the shrinking marketplace.

In recent years the fedora and other vintage hats have experienced a resurgence in popularity thanks in part to TV shows like Mad Men, celebrities rocking the vintage look, and an increased interest in all things vintage & retro.

This has been kicking around our apartment for a while, we end up keeping lots of strange little trinkets and treasures that could get lost in the shop, especially when they are this small, but we thought it was about time we shared some of our luck with you!

Sorry we haven't posted in a couple of weeks.... this time of year is always a bit hectic for us, the shop gets busier as the weather gets better, and it's a busy buying season too. Anyway, hopefully this is worth waiting for...

...We love interior decor at AMT, and just picked up a great collection of vintage home and decorating magazines from the 60s & 70s. Not the most subtle period for interior design, or anything else for that matter, the magazines are an interesting visual feast to say the least. . One of the magazine is entitled '1001 DECORATING IDEAS', and it was seemingly fashionable at the time to try and fit all the ideas into one room all at once! Here are just a few of our favorite picks..

Ceiling to ceiling carpet - apparently this basement room is great for listening to music, as the carpeting localizes sound by cutting down on echoes! From '1001 Decorating Ideas' 1970.

'Gay carrousel kitchen, invites activity and fun, whether for home making or party-giving' Taken from the World's Fair House Book of home styling ideas, a souvenir from the New York World's Fair 1964-65!

According to this issue of '1001 Decorating Ideas' from 1971 "Too much of a good thing... can be a good thing"...and apparently "yards and yards of butterscotch, red, navy, green and white plaid, fills a sitting room-guest-room without overwhelming it". You can be the judge of that!

As owners of a vintage store, this might be our personal favorite..."Think fashion the next you start a do-it-yourself home decorating project. Order extra fabric and trimming and sew up some original fashions to coordinate with your room decor. At-home clothes can be fancy or casual but will certainly have an extra flair if they match the rooms in which you wear them. Earn kudos, intrigue friends and family by sporting fashion and room go-togethers." Taken from '1001 Decorating Ideas' magazine, fall-winter 1967. Amazing!

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club...The Schott Perfecto!

This Schott NYC 'Perfecto' motorcycle jacket was just too damn cool not to blog about, so we snapped a couple of pictures before selling it earlier today. There can be no disputing that a black leather biker jacket is bad-ass, and the Schott Perfecto is the leather biker jacket.

This one dates from around the mid to late 1970s

Designed by Irving Schott in 1928, the Perfecto was the first leather motorcycle jacket of its kind. Ever the innovators, Schott were also the first outerwear company to put a zipper on a jacket! The Perfecto was immortalized on the silver screen and introduced to a new audience in the process by Marlon Brando in the 1953 movie 'The Wild One', and is now universally recognized as a symbol of rock 'n' roll cool thanks in no small part to punk pioneers The Ramones, for whom the Perfecto was almost a uniform. More recently Lady Gaga & Lilly Allen have been seen rocking the jacket.

For over 80 years, four generations of the Schott family have continued to make this iconic American classic. The Perfecto has remained pretty much unchanged in design since its inception, and is still made the same way, on the same machines, in a factory just outside NYC, and you can't say that about much these, so bravo to Schott.

AMT at the April Manhattan Vintage Show!

This time last week we were frantically preparing for Friday & Saturdays Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show. Now the dust has settled, we are pleased to say we can look back on an exciting and successful show. It's always an action packed and intense couple of days, with over 90 top quality vintage clothing dealers packed under one roof! When the doors open at 1pm on Friday afternoon, the line of fashion designers, stylists, collectors and fashionistas who have all been waiting outside in their droves descend on New Yorks 'Metropolitan Pavillion'. The hunt is well and truly on to seek out those special one-of-a-kind finds.

For the dealers and organizers, the day starts much earlier though, many traveling from far and wide throughout the night and early hours of the morning to load-in at the crack of dawn. Heavy antique display cases, rack after rack of vintage gowns and designer frocks pass you by, along with a few of last nights revelers. Bins of shoes and a sea of accessories and suitcases are all rolled, heaved and lugged through the delivery bay by our tired but (usually) friendly vintage family, each as eager as the next to start their elaborate set-up, and unveil the treasures they have unearthed over the past weeks and months. Six hours, as many coffees and a lot of stress later, the fun part begins!
